Peter DeJulio Lawyer Profile

CIVIL LITIGATOR

I began my legal career as a Bay Street Civil Litigation Lawyer, where I learned the skills of careful, detailed trial preparation and the management of all the documents associated with civil lawsuits. These skills have carried over into my work in Criminal Law, where complex cases now frequently involve mountains of documentation and paper disclosure, requiring meticulous study and analysis.

ASSISTANT CROWN ATTORNEY

After several years as a Bay Street lawyer, I became an Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto, where I was immersed in the high-pressure environment of handling multiple trials on a daily basis. During these years, I prosecuted the entire range of criminal offences one after another, often without the luxury of advance preparation. In this high-pressure atmosphere I honed my ability to think on my feet and respond quickly and effectively to all the twists and turns of criminal trials.

DEFENCE COUNSEL

After a decade as a Crown, I crossed over to the Defence Bar where, ironically, some of the same people that I had previously prosecuted now retained me to defend them on their criminal charges. As well as defending clients in the criminal courts, I was a guest lecturer and speaker at venues such as Aylmer Police College, Toronto Police Training Seminars, legal conferences, public issue forums and panels, law school and high school presentations, Sexual Assault Crisis Centre conferences, and television and radio programs.

CROWN COUNSEL IN BERMUDA

In 1994, I once more returned to the Crown – this time in Bermuda. Here, my position as Senior Crown Counsel for the Attorney General of Bermuda involved training and mentoring younger lawyers, as well as prosecuting all criminal offences, including homicides, drug importation, sexual offences and arson.

DEFENCE COUNSEL IN TORONTO (AGAIN)

Then, after two years of sunny courtrooms in Bermuda, I returned to Toronto, resuming my practice as a defence counsel. I now work not only in the criminal courts, but also at Coroners' Inquests and hearings before other regulatory and administrative tribunals, such as the Ontario Board of Review, Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, Immigration Tribunals, Workers Compensation Board, and Licensing Commissions.
